One Line Studio's design philosophy is deeply rooted in the aspiration to connect with the natural environment. The structure's silhouette, aspiring towards the mountain peaks, is a deliberate attempt to frame the beauty of its setting, which includes wetland vegetation, natural grasses, and woodlands. The interior is a dance of light and shadow, where a timber wall and a suspended glass curtain blur the lines between the indoors and the outdoors.
The design's uniqueness lies in its literal and figurative representation of a 'line' that connects the earth to the sky. A rusted steel wall firmly grounds one side of the building, while the roof's thin edge reaches for the heavens. The glass façade, interspersed with vertical cedar fins, not only mitigates glare but also visually ascends from the earth, symbolizing growth and connection with the sky above.
One Line Studio's construction showcases the innovative use of dowel laminated timber (DLT), chosen for its dual role as a structural and aesthetic element. The DLT panels, prefabricated and checked for consistency, allow for on-site adjustments, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and biophilic design. This collaboration with International Timber Frames has resulted in a seamless integration of form and function.
The building's technical specifications are a testament to the meticulous attention to detail. The primary structure, a blend of DLT panels, steel, and concrete, features compression clips that affix the glazing directly to the steel, removing the need for additional framing. The incorporation of AC diffusers into the DLT panel expansion joints and the innovative use of adjustable rope light fixtures are just a few examples of the design's ingenuity. Furthermore, the use of native grasses in the landscaping fosters a connection with the nearby wetlands, emphasizing the studio's symbiotic relationship with its environment.
One Line Studio is not just a workspace but an immersive experience. The alternating depth DLT panel walls fine-tune the studio's acoustics, fostering a creative atmosphere conducive to collaboration. The design ensures privacy at seating height through strategically placed tall native grasses, while standing positions offer unobstructed mountain vistas. The mezzanine level, in particular, provides panoramic views, reinforcing the building's dialogue with the landscape.
In conclusion, One Line Studio is a remarkable architectural endeavor that has successfully overcome creative and technical challenges to deliver a building that is both a workspace and a piece of art. It stands as a beacon of design excellence, having been recognized with the Golden A' Design Award, and serves as an inspiration for future projects that seek to marry innovation with environmental consciousness. Tim Politis and his team have created a space that not only functions as an architectural office but also as a statement of design's potential to elevate our connection to the natural world.
